A Rhode Island State Trooper has pleaded not guilty to simple assault charges.

James Donnelly-Taylor of Warwick, a five-year veteran of the Rhode Island State Police, was accused of roughing up Lionel Monsanto back in February at the Lincoln barracks. Monsanto was arrested for driving a vehicle without a license.

Donnelly-Taylor was previously suspended with pay pending the outcome of the case. He was arraigned Wednesday with bail set at $5,000 personal recognizance.
