Rhode Island's healthcare enrollment agency will start costing the state.

HealthSource RI's Director Christine Ferguson held an open Q&A Thursday for media to discuss the benefits and costs of keeping the state-based exchange.

Ferguson says aside from the $50 million provided in federal dollars, the state will need to fund another $4.6 million for the agency to operate.

She says the added cost is money well-spent to allow Rhode Island to make policy decisions and keep control.

"Keep that money in Rhode Island and use it to continue the progress we've made. honestly nobody has ever done this before, anywhere, federal or state, we have exceeded our estimates so far."

Ferguson believes they may be able to drive down costs of insurance in the future by building private, public partnerships.
