It was one of the worst illegal dump sites ever discovered in Providence and today the people who cleaned it up were honored.

The city council awarded citations to members of the Providence rescue mission.

Last month volunteers from the mission cleaned up an illegal dump site at the corner of Cranston and Waldo streets.

Among the garbage dumped there, hundreds of hypodermic needles left right near where children walk in the neighborhood.

The clean–up crew was praised for volunteering.

"When I came over to the Providence Rescue Mission and talked to the director, he was very responsive and said, 'Well we're going to get some guys to volunteer to help you out to clean this lot," says Councilman Wilbur Jennings.

"It was the fellowship, the getting together,” says Pastor Steven Gomes, “and the working together for one cause – to keep this neighborhood clean and also safe for the children around here."

ABC 6 News was also given a citation for bringing awareness to the dangerous conditions and being the only media outlet in Rhode Island to report the story.
