A Rhode Island couple will join millions of people in Normandy next week on the 70th anniversary of D-Day.  Thomas and Nancy Pirnie who are both Marine Corps veterans will pay tribute to many local veterans during their trip.

"We're actually bringing small little tribute flowers, a little patriotic commemoration that we are going to leave at specific sites,” said Nancy Pirnie.

The couple found many local ties after starting a Facebook page called Tribute to Service Memorials. As of now they plan to honor at least 24 veterans while in France.

"Just in the past four or five days we've gotten a lot of responses. We got a wonderful addition to our collection of a Wakefield Rhode Island veteran Walter Heisler," said Nancy Pirnie.

The trip will be a celebration of Nancy and Thomas's 30th wedding anniversary and 50th birthdays. While touring France for about 2 weeks they each say they will be honoring people with close ties to their hearts.

"I myself have numerous old friends. I actually wrote a book in 2001 about Battle of the Bulge veterans and they also obviously landed in that time frame of Normandy so I'll be doing a tribute to them,” said Thomas Pirnie.

"I have my grandfather who served in WWI, I have an uncle who served in occupied Germany after WWII, I have a great uncle who was a POW in WWII," said Nancy Pirnie.

The Pirnies say they plan to expand their Facebook site to a webpage following their trip and hope to keep local families talking about veterans through both platforms.
