WARWICK - It seems to have happened overnight.... Gold's gym in Warwick is now Global Gym.

And though existing memberships are being honored customers are facing some new fees.

It has the workout community divided.

Gold's Gym on Bald Hill Road in Warwick has been open more than 20 years.

Some members have been paying the same rates for just that long.

But now ownership has changed hands, and members are met with a new annual maintenance fee... $29.99 to continue their existing membership to its term.

"Global Gym decided to keep the gym open, we had the opportunity if we wanted to close the gym for a week, re–put all the signs up, and reopen and charge everyone from the beginning. We decided not to do that," said new owner Anthony Moretti.

He says the new fees will go right back into the gym.

Since he's honoring existing memberships, none of his 3800 customers will need to pay a new signup fee for the new gym.

He says that leaves him with no initial capital to fix existing problems in the facility.

Some longtime members agree.

"I can tell there's improvements being made, so it's like... It's really not that big of a deal," said member Raphael Dorval.

"I think the changeover is probably for the better. The price you were paying before was ridiculously low so if you can't afford the change you don't belong in this gym basically," said member Drew Scott.

But there are others who feel that the new owner's problems aren't necessarily theirs. And that they shouldn't be charged anything extra.

"In today's economy, we don't know whether this gym's going to be here in another year, the consumer really could be hurt by the up charge," said one longtime member who wished to remain anonymous.

Gold's members don't have to sign up with global gym, but if they paid their membership in full they will not be reimbursed.

It's a new business now, with no ties to the previous owner.

The previous owner is the same owner of the Gold's Gym in North Providence that closed unexpectedly last month.

Moretti says the yearly maintenance fees will remain in place until he can get global gym up and running.
