A federal security officer remains in critical condition after he was struck by a Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority bus Wednesday afternoon.

69–year–old Frank McKnight was hit by the bus while crossing Washington Street between the federal courthouse and the federal building.

Police say speed was not a factor in the crash.

McKnight has worked as a court security officer for 13 years. He is a retired North Kingstown Police Lt. He worked in that community for 25 years.

A statement from the U.S. Marshals Service reads: “We are truly thankful for the outpouring of support and concern for Officer McKnight from fellow law enforcement officers, the court and from the community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family.”

Many neighbors describe McKnight as a man always looking to lend a helping hand. One tells ABC 6 News that McKnight coincidentally  takes a RIPTA bus to work each day.

ABC 6 News did reach out to RIPTA for comment but they will not say anything until Providence Police wrap up their investigation.
