COVENTRY - It's more than just some fancy footwork...

Irish dance is 14 year old Emily Pietrantozzi's passion.

More than 6 hours each week prepped her for the international stage last month where she became the first American ever to win the grand prize at the World Irish Dance Association European Championship... and 2nd place at the World Championship.

"I got there and I saw how amazing everyone else was, so I was a little intimidated, but then when I just went on stage I just did what I normally do, and I just danced," she said.

Emily, along with two other dancers from the Kelly School of Irish Dance in Coventry, made their way to Germany for the competitions.
But getting there required more than just travel.

"When you're training to be an Irish dancer a world champion dancer, there are so many styles she learns, and it becomes not just a commitment of 'oh I like to dance,' or 'I enjoy being an Irish dancer,' it becomes their life," said owner/instructor Meghan Kelly.

For her,
Emily's success is more than just her medals. She was the first student  Megan ever taught.

"She came off stage looking so proud and came over and gave me a hug and it was just one of those [moments] like, oh wow, we did this, I helped create that," said Kelly.

Emily has been dancing since she was 6 year old. She originally took up Irish dance, following in her mothers footsteps.

"It's amazing;  I love to watch her on stage. I get all choked up every time I watch her," said mom Mary.

Emily says she'll work toward a first place medal at the next world competition, and continue to focus on her bigger goal.

"I hope to be a dance teacher when I'm older too," said Emily.
