The Newport City Council cleared the way for the possible expansion of the Newport Grand Casino.

Wednesday night, the council voted 4-3 in favor of a resolution to ask the General Assembly to put a referendum before voters in November to decide whether table games will be allowed at the slots parlor.

Table games would seal the deal for a team of investors including former Providence Mayor Joe Paolino to take over the casino.

"We are not gonna let the people of Newport down and we'll continue to listen to the people that have their concerns.  We're gonna do everything we can to let them know that this is going to be an entertainment center," said Paolino.

Many people spoke out against the project during the meeting.  Some feel the expanded gaming would hurt the existing businesses in the city.
