Graduation season is here, a very special time for so many teens. One New Bedford man will see his grandson graduate this week, but he will receive a special honor himself.

The memories are still clear for World War II Veteran, Donat Bernier. He says, "at 17 I left to join the Navy." From 1942 to 1945 Bernier served on the USS Hornet. The proud veteran doesn't leave home without his Hornet hat but his courageous service also had him miss out on a milestone back home, a high school graduation.

Now, more than 70 years later Bernier is getting his high school diploma. He says, " I think it's great! It's something different and something I didn't expect."

And it won't just be Bernier crossing the stage, his grandson is also graduating from New Bedford Voc-Tech High School this year. Beth Kilanowich, Bernier's daughter says, "
My son is graduating high school, and my dad, so to speak is graduating high school."

Not only will they share graduation together, Logan Kilanowich is following in his grandpas footsteps. He's enlisted in the Navy and leaves in August for training. He says, " I think it's pretty neat, not everyone gets to graduate high school with their grandfather and then follow in the same footsteps."

Logan has heard his grandpas Navy stories his whole life and even dressed up in the old Navy uniform. The bit of advice his grandpa has for him, " Be careful, be careful, don't try to run anything...you won't get away with it!"
