The issue of backyard chickens is back on the agenda for the Woonsocket City Council.  It comes nearly a year after a similar less strict proposal was defeated.

The board will hear an ordinance proposal Monday to make it legal for someone to raise chickens on their property.

This new ordinance sponsored by Councilor Dan Gendron, if passed, would require someone to get a special zoning permit if they want to own live chickens.

“What that zoning variance will do is it will give them the chance to go and plead their case before the Zoning Board and it also gives neighbors a chance to oppose it and that’s what was lacking from the previous ordinance,” said Councilor Gendron.

Many people were opposed to the ordinance last year because they had concerns about noise and smell.

Meanwhile, there are many people who wish to own chickens.

“We would definitely love to have chickens and be able to have eggs.  I mean I just don’t see why it’s a big deal.  I don’t understand why people are so up in arms against it,” said resident Amanda Martel.

The ordinance will be before the council Monday night.
