PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A former state representative accused of pocketing $28,000 from a life insurance policy on a friend's dead daughter has been found guilty of unlawful appropriation but cleared of two other charges.

A spokeswoman for the state attorney general said Monday a jury found ex-Rep. Leo Medina guilty of one count of unlawful appropriation.

Medina was found not guilty on an embezzlement charge and a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses.

The jury deliberated for two hours.

Spokeswoman Amy Kempe says the judge set bail at $10,000 with surety and ordered Medina to surrender his passport.

She stated that Medina's lawyer is requesting a new trial. A hearing on that request is set for June 16.

Medina served one term representing Providence.

The Democrat lost his re-election bid in 2012.
