President Barack Obama appointed a new superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, the defense secretary said Friday.
The appointment of Navy Rear Adm. Walter Carter, who would be promoted to the rank of vice admiral, needs U.S. Senate approval. Carter is now serving as president of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Carter would replace Vice Adm. Michael Miller, who became the 61st superintendent of the academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 2010.

Carter, a native of Burrillville, Rhode Island, became the 54th president of the U.S. Naval War College in July 2013.
He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1981 and was designated a naval flight officer in 1982.

Carter graduated from the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School in the last F-4 Phantom class in 1985.
