Police in Sharon are warning residents to be vigilant after an animal, believed to be a bobcat, was seen roaming around in a neighborhood.

A resident saw the large animal and quickly snapped a photo.

Bobcats are common in certain parts of Massachusetts, but not as common in the eastern part of the state, according to the state wildlife department. Bobcats usually go after wild prey, not domestic animals, according to officials.

Officials remind residents that they should not feed wildlife, prevent the buildup of feeder foods under the bird feeders, and keep small pets indoors, especially from dusk to dawn.

Bobcats are known to climb fences and structures.
