PROVIDENCE, RI- 23–year–old Luis "Fat Boy" Gonzalez has been acquitted of murder.

The family of murder victim, 12–year-old Aynis Vargas left court today without saying a word.

"Those words: ‘not guilty’ are very difficult for them to hear but they are very respectful people and they respect the process,” said, Assistant Attorney General, Stacey Veroni.

The defense attorney expressed mixed feelings about the verdict.

"We're relieved he was acquitted in the murder and obviously disappointed that he was convicted of the many other counts," said defense attorney, Robert Mann.

Gonzalez was found guilty on the eight lesser charges including assault with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit AWD, and four felony gun charges.

Combined, the charges carry a maximum sentence of life plus 130 years.

Providence Public Safety Commissioner, Steven Paré said, "We're hoping that he'll go away for a long time including the four other defendants."

Gonzalez was accused of conspiring with four other members of the Harriet Street gang to shoot at a graduation party last June.

The 12–year–old girl was killed; three other women were injured.

RI Attorney General, Peter Kilmartin said, "Aynis' father actually said I hope this sends a message to not just the people who committed this heinous crime but to everyone that this senseless violence has to stop and I admire the strength of the family throughout this whole trial.

During the trial, Gonzalez took the stand telling jurors he didn't realize his accomplice was armed until seconds before he jumped out of the van they were in and shot into the crowd.

The man who shot Vargas, 21–year–old Branden Castro is serving two consecutive life terms.

Gonzalez's next court date is June 26th. A sentencing date has yet to be set.
