The Senate has approved a bill requiring animal abusers to pay for the cost of the animal’s care.

Rhode Island law already requires that any animal owner convicted of cruelty to animals forfeit ownership of the animal to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

If passed, this bill would help the SPCA care for those animals.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Stephen Archambault, now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
