The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved a bill that would put an end to straight ticket voting or the “master lever”.

The bill was approved on a 10-to-1 vote after it was amended so that it wouldn't take effect until 2015, after the fall elections.

It now goes to a full vote in the senate.

A version of the bill has already passed overwhelmingly in the House.

Rhode Island is one of only 14 states that still allows straight ticket voting.
