Saturday evening ABC6 News Morning Anchor Matt Blanchette will be throwing out the first pitch at the PawSox game. Ahead of the big event his colleagues wanted to wish him good luck, and remind him that he better not embarrass us!
"I'd say it's a tremendous amount of pressure. I mean, we're talking weight of the world on his shoulders to get this ball to go over home plate," said co–anchor Doreen Scanlon.
Scanlon knows a thing or two about getting the ball in the strike zone. A few years back she had a near perfect pitch when she took the mound at McCoy Stadium. $100 later, Meteorologist Steve Cascione is still hearing about that one. But Cash has a little more confidence in Matt, after all, he is our former sports guy. So will there be a wager this time around?
"Uh, I don't know. Maybe I'll have a little side bet with Doreen. I'm not exactly sure what we'll wager yet, but knowing her she's probably not going to want to spend a lot of money," said Cascione.
General Manager Chris Tzianabos is upping the ante.
"I'm here to tell Matt that if he embarrasses the station there's going to be some job consequences involved. So, uh, feel good about it buddy!" he said.
Of course throwing the first pitch isn't easy. We've seen plenty of awful attempts– look no further than rapper 50 Cent who threw just a bit outside. After a scouting report on Matt, the PawSox are getting nervous the might have another Carley Ray Jepsen on their hands.
"I've heard that arm speed is a little below average, accuracy. So, uh, we'll see though. Hopefully the pressure won't get to him," joked Kevin Boles, Manager of the PawSox.
Let's just hope he does better than Charlie Brown who was ranked among the top 10 worst first pitches by ESPN.
The game is scheduled for 6:05 PM at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. The PawSox will take on the Charlotte Knights.
