The Central Falls Detention Facility Corporation filed a petition today in Rhode Island Superior Court to appoint a receiver to assume control of the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility’s troubled finances.

The Wyatt was opened in 1993 as a publically owned and privately operated adult correctional facility.

From 1994-2009, the City of Central Falls received a total of $5.3 million in host community impact payments. Payments were suspended in 2009 following a decision by the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement Agency to withdraw detainees from the facility, resulting in a sharply decreased prisoner population and decreased revenue.

As of January 15th, 2014, Wyatt’s outstanding bond debt was $97,300,000. In 2012, Wyatt lost $2.7 million. In 2013, Wyatt lost $3.3 million. As of March 31st, 2014, Wyatt had lost $1.6 million.

Jonathan N. Savage was appointed temporary receiver of the Central Falls Detention Facility Corporation by Superior Court.
