National grid is trying to get Rhode Island communities to save money, by lowering their utility costs.

The utility company and various government leaders held a workshop at the CCRI campus in Warwick today.

The goal is to get cities and towns to look for more efficient energy and to consider renewable options, like solar and wind.

Some communities have already done energy makeovers on public buildings and it's paying off.

“Well we've got some success stories that we've noted here since,” says Tim Horan, National Grid President, “the school for instance, will save $150 thousand dollars a year in their annual costs; have new equipment installed in their facilities; it promotes greater lighting, better lighting."

Senator Whitehouse and Governor Chafee were among those who spoke at today's municipal energy conference.
