Four Providence hotel workers and one Central Falls City Counselor will announce plans to go on a hunger strike in protest of a provision in the Rhode Island budget that prohibits municipalities from imposing their own minimum wage laws.

Last week the House of Representatives passed a provision in the budget preventing cities and towns from setting their own minimum wage.

The decision was made on the same day that the Providence City Council approved a ballot question that would ask voters if they agree with setting a $15 an hour minimum wage for Providence hotel workers.
