Hunger Strike begins in Providence

A hunger strike over minimum wage started tuesday outside the Rhode Island Statehouse.

Four women are protesting a provision in the state budget preventing communities from setting their own minimum wage.

The three hotel workers and Central Falls Councilwoman plan to only drink water going forward. Last week the Providence City Council voted to let voters decide if the minimum wage should be raised to $15 dollars an hour.

But if the Governor signs the budget, which he says he plans to, then individual municipalities can't set their own rate.

The women - not allowed to set up a tent on the state house property - are using umbrellas to combat the heat.
