The General Assembly has approved legislation that will raise Rhode Island’s minimum wage to $9 in 2015.

This is a $1-an-hour raise over the current minimum wage of $8 an hour. In 2013 the General Assembly increased the minimum wage by 25-cents to $8.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Erin Lynch and Representative David Bennett.

While this bill passed as part of the state budget the General Assembly barred cities and towns from setting local minimum wage standards that are higher than the state standard.
