Providence's current Mayor, Angel Taveras, may be looking to trade in his seat at City Hall for the big one on Smith Hill, but the Democrat still has strong feelings on who should, or shouldn't replace him. One day after former Mayor, Vincent "Buddy" Cianci made his candidacy official Taveras is speaking out.

Taveras says during his administration the city has made progress. The Democrat won't say who he is endorsing, but that the right person for the job needs to keep the forward momentum going.

"We're a free country. Anyone has a right to run, but I trust the voters in terms of making sure that the city moves forward and that the progress that we have started under my administration continues into the future," Taveras told reporters when asked about Cianci's decision to run for a third time.

Cianci, 73, officially threw his hat into the ring Wednesday afternoon. He joins the heated race to replace Taveras who is stepping down from the seat after just one term. Taveras is mounting a run for Governor.

Taveras says after the primary he plans on endorsing the Democratic candidate, but not before. Cianci was first elected mayor as a Republican. When he made his comeback in 1990 he ran as an Independent. This time around he is also running as an Independent.
