There may have been a lot of fanfare for Buddy Cianci Wednesday, as he announced his bid to again become Providence Mayor.

But he faces some potential obstacles.

Since he is running as an independent, current Mayor Angel Taveras says he will eventually endorse the Democratic primary winner, not Cianci.

"I trust the voters, in terms of making sure the city moves forward, and that the progress that we have started under my administration, continues into the future," said Providence Mayor Angel, (D) Candidate for Rhode Island Governor.

Problem number two for Cianci, may involve Master Lever voting.

Since it won’t be banned until next year Democrats voting this fall may have some impact on the Providence Mayor's race.

"Master Lever voting – when it occurs – impacts every race underneath the top ticket race... That's where the harm is. That's where the big problem with the Master Lever has been documented. And it's a real shame it's not gone yet," said Ken Block, (R) Candidate for Rhode Island Governor.

Block - who led the effort to ban the Master Lever - and is now running for Governor, is not endorsing anyone in the Providence Mayor’s race.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "But Providence has changed a lot since the last time Cianci was Mayor, For example, from the 2000 to 2010 census, the city's Hispanic population, by 42 percent."

So, can Cianci get enough Latino support?

"In a crowded race, he only needs 30 to 35 percent of the vote. And so depending upon what demographic he can capture, and if he can capture some of the new demographic, he has a path to victory. We can't count him out," said Dr. Valerie Endress, a Professor of Political Communication at Rhode Island College.

For Cianci, it will be a five–way race in November.
