A teacher at the Adult Correctional Institute was arrested for allegedly obtaining $1,702.26 in wages under false pretenses from the State of Rhode Island and the Department of Corrections.

On Friday, June 27, 2014, Anne Kernick, 59, of Narragansett, Rhode Island was arrested and charged with:

·         Obtaining Money Under False Pretenses, and
·         Filing a False Document.

A joint investigation by the ACI Inspector’s Unit and the Rhode Island State Police began in March after workers at the Department of Corrections Special Education office reported a time card discrepancy.

Kernick is a school teacher at the Department of Corrections and has been employed at the Adult Correctional Institute since 1989.

It is suspected that between March 2014 and June 2014, Kernick purposely submitted false time cards for hours that she did not work.

She was arraigned on the above charges in Third Division District Court and released on $10,000.00 personal recognizance.

The penalty for a person convicted of Obtaining Money in Excess of $1500.00 is imprisonment for about 10 years or a fine of about $5,000, or both.
