Rhode Island's U.S. senators and Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx will be in the state this week to talk about how it could be affected if a federal fund that pays for highway and transit projects is not replenished.
Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, along with Foxx plan to meet with Gov. Lincoln Chafee and state transportation officials Thursday.
The federal Highway Trust Fund is expected to run out of money this summer unless Congress acts. The federal gas tax is the primary source of revenue for the fund and it has not been raised in two decades. The fund reimburses states for road projects.
Rhode Island receives most of its transportation budget from the federal government.
Foxx, Reed and Whitehouse will also talk with Chafee about transportation projects and investment priorities.
