An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a large fire at a waste disposal plant in Johnston early Wednesday morning.

Crews are still chasing hot spots at Patriot Disposal where a storage building erupted into flames around 2:45 a.m. this morning. Crews remained on the scene for several hours working to extinguish the fire.

The building at 160 Shun Pike, which was used to sort waste, is a total loss. According to authorities the building was full of trash and other combustible materials.

The fire chief told ABC6 that it is too early in the investigation to determine whether the cause of the fire is suspicious.

"Well I’ts undetermined because of where it is and the material that’s inside the building. But where going to do an investigation to see if we can determine the cause," said Chief Timothy McLaughlin.

No one was injured during the fire.
