PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Secretary of State Ralph Mollis says he's investigating whether a registered lobbyist broke disclosure laws, after a story by The Associated Press revealed he loaned money to former House Speaker Gordon Fox.

A candidate for secretary of state, Nellie Gorbea, on Wednesday asked Mollis to probe possible lobbying disclosure violations by Ray Rickman, a former deputy secretary of state.

Mollis said in a statement he had already begun looking into it. Rickman didn't immediately return messages.

The AP first reported last week that Rickman loaned Fox money in 2009.

Lobbyists must disclose any loan over $250 to a ``major decision maker.'' Rickman's filings show he didn't disclose the outstanding loan.

Authorities raided Fox's home and Statehouse office in March, prompting his resignation as speaker. They haven't said what they're investigating.
