A family of four escaped an early morning house fire at their Portsmouth home on Thursday.

Fire crews were called to 251 Sprague Street around 3 a.m. where they found the first and second floors of the home engulfed in heavy flames.

The family was awoken when they heard popping and cracking noises. According to firefighters on scene the family was very safety conscious and had an emergency plan in place which helped them escape the fire quickly and calmly.

In addition to the home, the fire also spread to two cars in the driveway.

The state fire marshal’s office is currently investigation the cause. The family is being assisted by the Red Cross.
