Police say a 2-year-old Cranston boy has died after an apparent drowning at 51 Mallory Court Thursday afternoon.

"As a mother it is panicky to see that happen to any child. It's devastating. It is a nightmare,” said neighbor Rebecca Cote.

Cote says she was vacuuming when she noticed a group of people outside, and heard someone scream.

"I looked through my back window and they were laying out on the deck and screaming, hysterically. So, I knew something was very wrong,” said Cote.

Police received a call around 1:45 pm that Jayce Sherman-Chattelle had fallen into a swimming pool and was unresponsive.

"I just looked out the window and say a lot of commotion people running around, rescue workers and the fire department,” said neighbor Jaime Cunha.

Emergency crews rushed the toddler to Hasbro Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"It's sad. I mean I see them all the time and they always walk by and cut through and what not,” said neighbor Patrick Strayer.

Police spent hours on scene going in and out of the home and the backyard.

Crime scene tape was placed around the perimeter of the house, and the swimming pool was drained.

"It hurts, and he's not even my kid but it's just like a pain in the heart,” said Jaquan Scripsack.

At this point police are not releasing any other details about the circumstances surrounding the toddler's fall into the pool.

The case remains under investigation.
