It may be biggest uphill fight in all of Rhode Island politics this year, but Republican Mark Zaccaria officially kicked off his campaign to take on longtime Democratic U.S. Senator Jack Reed.

"We currently have catastrophic economic policies; we have catastrophic regulatory policies which are burying businesses and making the economic situation that much worse. We have catastrophic foreign policies."

Zaccaria previously served two terms on the North Kingstown Town Council.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "Mark Zaccaria is certainly no stranger to Rhode Island voters. Twice he ran for Congress; and he also chaired the state's Republican Party."

"The people have to hear it. They have to understand that there is an alternative to business as usual," Zaccaria said.

While Zaccaria has name recognition, he is running against perhaps the best known politician in Rhode Island.

Senator Reed currently served on the Appropriations and Armed Services Committees in Washington, D.C.

"We've worked on the submarine contract. It is the most historic contract in the Navy, for years of good work at Electric Boat; significant investments in the airport to make us a global point of economic attraction, so I just keep working," said Sen. Jack Reed (D) Rhode Island.

Both candidates served in the military - Reed in the Army; Zaccaria in the Air Force.
