After six hard–fought years, renters in Rhode Island are celebrating after the passage of new legislation that protects their rights.

The just cause eviction bill was signed on Tuesday. It protects tenants from being evicted by banks and lenders without just cause.

It's meant to help prevent renters who live in recently foreclosed properties. "Passage of the just cause legislation was a great example of a community's love for its people; it's an example of advocacy, it's an example of persistence and a spirit of cooperation," Senator Harold Metts of Providence said.

Housing advocacy groups also hope this will help lower the amount of abandoned and dilapidated homes.
