Swimmers in Smithfield have one less beach to enjoy the beautiful summer weather.

Greenlake Beach on Slacks Pond is closed this summer. Budget cuts forced the town to downsize from nine to five lifeguards.

Those five were assigned to Georgiaville Pond, leaving no one to watch private Greenlake Beach."

"I just feel bad that it's not open. It's nice to see the people go down there and enjoy themselves. But they do park along here and there on a nice day and they go down to the beach," neighbor Paul Meunier said.

Town officials say Greenlake Beach averages around 25 visitors a day during its busy season. When open, only town residents are allowed on the beach.
