GOP's Baker amends comment on contraceptive ruling

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Republican candidate for governor Charlie Baker is amending comments he made on the Supreme Court ruling that found some companies with religious objections can avoid the contraceptives requirement in President Obama's health care overhaul.

Baker had told reporters Wednesday that for Massachusetts, the court decision "doesn't change a thing."

On Thursday Baker said he misspoke. He said it's possible given the decision that a small segment of employers could qualify for the narrow exemption to the contraception mandate.

Baker said as governor he would make sure Massachusetts employers continue to offer comprehensive health insurance coverage, including contraception.

He said if any woman doesn't receive contraceptive coverage through her employer, his administration would make it available through the Department of Public Health.

Baker's original comments drew criticism from his Democratic rivals and women's rights groups.
