A new mural in New Bedford hopes to send a positive message to city residents. The  20 by 7 foot painting is located at the corner Acushnet and Coffin Avenues.

"It's absolutely gorgeous. It is an asset for this community, I think,” said Anthony Clark.

"It just wows me, just wow it looks so nice you know,” said Roger Auger.

The mural shows books that were picked out to represent the cultures of people living in the area. It was created by three men with ties to New Bedford.

"We just tried to represent everyone,” said one of the artists, Ryan McFee.

McFee says he hopes the mural will send a positive message and be a step towards revitalizing the North End.

"It's just about knowledge. It just means open your mind a little bit and realize there's more out there than what's around you,” said McFee.

As they created their art, they took input from people living in the area and let many pitch in to help.

"Guys in wheel chairs and some kids came by so they could put their names on it kind of hidden in there and different people came and helped when I was putting up the primer,” said McFee.

Now that it's done, residents are hoping they paint some more.

"It brightens it up now, it looks a lot better than it did before. I'd like to see more like that all over the city,” said Auger.

The mural was paid for with a grant from the city.

McFee tells us he'd love to create more art like this across the city.
