Nearly two dozen firefighters in Fall River are working their last shifts. Layoffs across the department go into effect at 5 PM Friday. The federal grant that pays their salaries is set to run out.

27 firefighters in all will lose their jobs. Crews have known about the cuts for a while, but were hoping the city would find the funds to keep them.

After the staffing cuts, only 175 firefighters will remain. Residents told ABC6 News that they are concerned about safety.

“It's a troubling situation and unfortunately things couldn't be handled any differently than it is,” said Olga Scanlon.

“The city had a few years to resolve all of this you know to come to a conclusion and really nothing was done so they found themselves in bind. Now we lose some firemen so it is too bad, said Everett Castro.

Some of the effects are already being felt. Earlier this week two engines were taken out of service.

35 positions were originally on the chopping block, but several senior firefighters retired so that younger firefighters could keep their jobs.
