A hearing by the Secretary of State’s office is focused on why local attorney Michael Corso, never registered as a paid lobbyist for “38 studios.”

"As far as we're concerned there isn't any doubt that this is a political issue, and it has a lot to do with the fact that Mr. Mollis wants to be Lieutenant Governor and he trying to figure out a way to make the people actually think he is doing his job as Secretary of State," said Michael Corso’s attorney, Anthony Traini.

Secretary Mollis did not attend the hearing.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "The Secretary of State's Office believes it has the smoking gun; a written agreement between Michael Corso and 38 Studios that pays Corso $300 thousand dollars a year to lobby on behalf of the video game company."

"This is ridiculous!” said attorney Traini.

But attorneys for Michael Corso - who did not show up for the hearing - say no one has proven the contract is authentic.

Attorneys for the state say Corso ought to come testify.

"I'm sure Mr. Corso would be very aware of what it is, if he appeared here this morning... you know, like I said, with Mr. Corso not being here obviously is an issue," said Mark Welch, the Counsel for the Secretary of State’s office.

Rhode Island may lose $100 million dollars in the “38 Studios” debacle.

So, some lawmakers want answers.

"The taxpayers are paying for it.  So the taxpayers need to know the truth... It needs to be investigated to the fullest extent and for people to call this a political game is just wrong,” said State Rep. Doreen Costa (R) North Kingstown-Exeter.

This “38 Studios” hearing resumes July 29th.
