Flames reaching through the roof of The Lebanese Kitchen restaurant, and the home attached, on Purchase Street in New Bedford.

The fire ignited around 11 AM Friday morning on the side of the home.

The family of the five, who had run the restaurant for 30 years and lives upstairs, watched in horror.

"30 years of my life it took to build and it went so fast," Nabih Moujabber was inside with his wife, two of his sons, and a waitress getting ready to open for business when he smelled the smoke.

"I ran inside to get my wife and back inside to get my dogs."

Everyone made it out safely just as fire crews arrived.

Crews attempted an interior attack and an initial search of the building. They were able to make it briefly up to the second floor before the volume of fire forced them out of the building.

At one point the smoke was so thick you couldn’t make out the building. It took over an hour to calm the flames drawing big crowds of onlookers.

It wasn’t easy for the Moujabber family to watch. "This is our business our livelihood but it’s also our home."

Mayor John Mitchell promised to support the family and do what he can for the restaurant that’s been am icon in the city for decades, "Whatever the findings we'll support them."
