A decision by the City Council Monday night will allow landlords in Providence to save some money come tax time.

The City Council overrode a veto by Mayor Taveras of an ordinance that lowers the tax rate for rental property owners in the capital city.

Mayor Taveras a statement Monday saying:

“Mark my words: the Providence City Council just voted to increase taxes for the majority of homeowners in Providence, while renters are unlikely to see any benefit. There was no need for this ordinance, as the Council could have addressed concerns about tax rates during the budgeting process. Homeowners in our cities and towns are already feeling squeezed. We should not be passing any laws that could add to their burden.”

The council is shifting a nearly $7 million tax burden onto regular homeowners.
