Lifespan to add surcharge for employees who use tobacco

Rhode Island’s largest employer is hitting its workers with a stiff surcharge if they use tobacco.

Lifespan has decided  that starting in 2015, if an employees, their spouse or partner, use tobacco, they will add a $600 charge to an employees medical benefits.

The company is offering free programs to help their employees stop smoking.

Lifespan says that the move will help them reduce healthcare costs.
