Tiverton residents say homes damaged by blasting

Posted: Updated:

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Tiverton residents are complaining that blasting at a local quarry has damaged nearby homes and water lines.

The Newport Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/JV2etp ) home owners testified Monday night at a hearing before the Town Council, which is considering amending its earth-removal ordinance to address the issue.

Neighbors of the Tiverton Materials quarry on Fish Road say blasting there has tripled there over the past year, leading to broken chimneys, cracked walls and water line breaks.

They also say there is no fence around what one resident described as a "mini-Grand Canyon."

Lawrence McCarthy III, and attorney for Tiverton Materials, told the council there are plans for a fence and that the company is a responsible neighbor. He argued the town's ordinance does not apply to the quarrying of granite.
