A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Kennedy Plaza renovations in Providence Tuesday morning. Mayor Taveras, RIPTA and community stakeholders attended the event.

The transportation hub is about to undergo some major renovations. The project was first unveiled in April 2013. It will transform the commuter hub into a large community focal point with fewer buses and improved pedestrian walkways.

The ceremony officially kicked off the $2.4 million renovation of the area. The work is expected to be complete by late fall 2014.

Over the weekend crews put up fences and orange barrels. Buses were moved out of the immediate area ahead of the construction.

Riders can still buy bus tickets at Kennedy plaza, but now the buses will pick up riders on surrounding streets.
