A group is suing the city of Providence on claims that the city has violated an ordinance that requires entities receiving more than $25,000 in public funds to give hiring preference to Providence residents.

Direct Action for Rights and Equality, (DARE) filed the suit at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in Providence Superior Court.

The group is asking the court to appoint a monitor to ensure Providence notifies employers of the ordinance and begins enforcing it.

Further the group is requesting a temporary restraining order to prevent the city from issuing any other tax stabilization agreements, Providence Economic Development Partnership loans or any other financing covered by the loans until the city improves compliance.
