A major company has announced it’s laid off employees in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Defense and aerospace systems giant Raytheon did not disclose how many employees it laid off, but did say that it employs 1,000 across Rhode Island and 11,800 in Massachusetts.

"Shifts in engineering and production work, delay in contract awards and the current budgetary environment requires us to realign our resources which has resulted in a small reduction in workforce across Raytheon IDS,” says Director of Corporate Public Relations Michael Doble.

“Those employees affected by the action will have the opportunity to apply for other jobs within Raytheon, will be provided access to extensive career counseling and employment services, and will be given severance packages based on their length of service with the company."
