And with those spades of dirt, ground was broken on the Kennedy Plaza renovation.

Work has already been underway for days.

In the end, the idea is to spread out the transit hub; put in better lights and landscaping; and, make it a more park–like setting.

"My hope is that you are going to have a public space that is going to generate more economic activity, more people coming into the city," said Mayor Angel Taveras, (D) Providence.

In the short term, many of the RIPTA buses are being rerouted.

ABC6 Chief Political Reporter Mark Curtis said, "Now everyone involved admits there is some confusion at first. But there are maps now in all of the bus shelters downtown, to try and help people make their transfers."

Some folks are not happy.

"Today I got off the bus way over here, when I usually get off over there." Q: So it's confusing? "It's really confusing," said RIPTA rider Frank Seal.

But RIPTA is staffing the plaza with extra workers, and some passengers are okay with the changes.

"They're doing good. They're handing out these papers to help you find the busses and where they are at. And i think it's very easy," said RIPTA rider Natalie Howell.

The renovations at Kennedy Plaza should be done by late fall.

"We're just all hands on deck at RIPTA, trying to get the word out, so people understand. Once they get accustomed – the first few days are always hard – but once people get accustomed to the new service, you know, it will get easier," said RIPTA planner Amy Pettine.

The Kennedy Plaza face lift is projected to cost 7–point–2 million dollars, and is also designed to make the area safer for drivers and pedestrians.
