In February, a group of Brown University and RISD students were collaborating with students from the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt in Germany to compete in the 2014 Solar Decathlon Europe in Versailles, France.

The competition required each of the 20 teams to design and build an efficient solar-powered house from scratch using materials not used in residential construction, and figure out how to transport it to France for an international competition.

The team of Brown, RISD and UASE students named their house, Techstyle Haus. The house was judged in 10 categories, including Communication and Social Awareness, House Functioning, Comfort Condition, and Energy Efficiency.

Techstyle Haus won 3rd place in Comfort Condition, and came in 14th place overall.

Although the team didn’t take home gold, team member and Brown student Helen Bergstrom says, “The Solar Decathlon has been an amazing and crazy experience. It was an incredible opportunity to show our peers, professionals, and the world that 35 students are capable of building the future.”

The house took nearly 2 years to perfect. The team was accepted in December 2012, and spent the next year enlisting sponsorships from around the globe and refining their designs.

Techstyle Haus was toured by an estimated 20,000 people during the two weeks it spent in Versailles.

The house will be sent to Lessac, France to serve as student housing at Domaine de Boisbuchet.

The winner of the competition was Rhome for Dencity, designed by Università degli Studi Roma Tre in Rome, Italy
