Coakley, Berwick receiving public matching funds

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls Martha Coakley and Donald Berwick have each received nearly $309,000 in public matching funds for the primary.

Under the public financing law, a statewide candidate who is opposed, has agreed to observe a statutory spending limit, and submits the minimum amount of qualifying contributions is eligible to receive public matching funds.

According to the Office and Campaign and Political Finance, Berwick and Coakley both submitted the necessary qualifying contributions and were certified to receive funding.

The state Comptroller's Office says the State Election Campaign Fund contained about $1.2 million as of June 30.

That amount was split in half - with about $618,000 available for the primary election and the same amount set aside for the general election.

The law calls for candidates for governor to be funded first.
