Dartmouth Select Board member arrested on federal embezzlement charges

A member of the Dartmouth Select Board has been arrested and charged with embezzlement from an organization receiving federal funds and conspiring to commit and offense against the United States.

The former owner of the New Bedford based Union Street Bus Company (USBC), 68-year-old John George, Jr. was arrested on Wednesday following a federal indictment. The USBC was granted a Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA) ccontractto operate the public bus system that serviced New Bedford, Fall River, and surrounding communities.

It is alleged that while owning the USBC George operated John George Farms in Dartmouth he conspired with certain individuals to have USBC employees work at the JG Farm during their hours with the USBC.

George allegedly deployed USBC workers to JG Farm th help repair equipment. He also allegedly used USBC equipment and labor to provide personal out-of-state roadside assistance and inflated his own salary from $75,000 to $275,000 in an attempt to boost his SRTA pension.
