Today Rhode Island is the only state in the nation to mark Victory Day.

The state holiday marks the Japanese surrender to the United States at the end of World War II.

Arkansas was the last state to drop the holiday eliminating it in 1975.

Following World War II President Truman declared Sept. 2 as the official “Victory over Japan” Day. Rhode Island established the holiday in 1948 to be set on August 14.

Many states dropped the holiday decades later saying the celebration was harming relations with Japan.
