The Ice bucket challenge is continuing to grow in popularity throughout the Ocean State.

Monday, around two dozen took part in the challenge as part of the kick-off to the annual ALS walk.

"People who never knew or who would know what ALS is now know,” said the Chairman of the Board of Representatives of the National ALS Association, Ken McGunagle.

"Now people are talking about it and its all over the place so that's why I'm doing it,” said Annie McGunagle who lost her grandfather to the disease.

The challenge, which involves either dumping a bucket of ice water on your head or donating money to ALS has gone viral in a very short time frame.

From July 29 through August 11 the ALS Association reports receiving more than $1.3 million in donations. During the same time last year, they only raised about $22,000.

"There are so many people in our community that have been touched by ALS in some way. And, I think this is bringing a lot of exposure to that,” said The Chapter President of the Rhode Island ALS Association, John Pagliarini.

The money raised locally will go to help ALS patients and their families.

The Rhode Island ALS walk is scheduled for September 21.
